Acting Workshop 2008
Curriculum
The classes
offer an original approach to acting training developed over 20 years by
renowned director of Modern Times, artistic director Soheil Parsa. This year, participants
will be taken on a theatrical exploration of the work of the late Iranian poet,
Forugh Farrokhzad.
Forugh’s
poems have been described as full of a bitter longing. They are timeless,
profoundly humanist, feminist and deeply controversial. Forugh confronted the
social, political and religious conventions of the Iranian society of her time;
as a woman, she was writing poetry in the male-dominated world of Persian
literature. Forugh Farrokhzad died in a car accident at age of 32 in 1967. Her
work has been translated into English, Italian, French and Greek. For more
information about her work and life, please visit
www.forughfarrokhzad.org.
The workshop promises to be a fascinating multilingual exploration. In
collaboration with the students, and with the participation of musician
Thomas Ryder Payne and dramaturge Sue Balint, Soheil will select
fragments of her poems and montage them into a rough narrative for final
presentation, leading the students through a series of explorations with music,
movement and text inspired by a mixture of theatrical techniques. Within the
framework of their chosen text, students will learn to free their creative
energy with rich inner body imagery.
As stimulating for its creation aspect as for its actor training, the course is
designed for both professional actors who wish to add something unique their
palette and students of acting who want an alternative scene-study tool. Classes
are structured accordingly for these two groups.
